The chain that moves an enormous volume of USDT, especially outside wealthy economies.

Tron's significance is narrow but genuine: it carries a very large share of USDT transfers, particularly for users in emerging markets sending dollars cheaply. It is not a hub of DeFi innovation, and it does not try to be. Its relevance rests almost entirely on being a low-cost settlement rail for one stablecoin.
Tron is a payments rail, not a smart contract ecosystem; evaluate it as such.
Its fortunes are tied to USDT's issuance choices more than to its own technology.
Cheap dollar transfers for underbanked users is real utility, whatever one thinks of the governance.
Tron uses delegated proof of stake: TRX holders vote for a small set of block producers, called Super Representatives, who produce all blocks. Concentrating production among few validators is what makes the chain fast and cheap, and it is also precisely why its decentralization is questioned. Users can additionally freeze TRX to obtain bandwidth and energy, effectively paying for transactions by locking capital instead of spending it.

Voting for Super Representatives who produce blocks
TRX is needed to pay for transactions or, more commonly for heavy users, to be frozen in exchange for resources. Because stablecoin transfers on Tron are so numerous, that creates steady structural demand for TRX. The dependency runs one way and is worth naming: if USDT issuance shifted away from Tron, the chain's core use case would shrink sharply.
Validator concentration: a small set of Super Representatives produces all blocks.
Single point of dependency: the network's main use case is USDT transfers.
Governance is closely associated with its founder, a concentration of influence unusual even in crypto.
Regulatory scrutiny of both the founder and the network has been persistent.
Limited developer ecosystem beyond payments and simple token transfers.
Cost. A USDT transfer on Tron costs a small fraction of the same transfer on Ethereum's base layer, which matters enormously when the amount being sent is modest. For someone remitting a few hundred dollars, an Ethereum gas fee can consume a meaningful share of the transfer while Tron's does not.
