A chain's gas token and an exchange's utility token, fused into one asset.

BNB does two jobs at once. It is the gas and staking asset of BNB Chain, an EVM network with heavy retail activity, and it is the utility token of the Binance exchange, granting fee discounts and access to launch programs. That dual role means its value is tied to the commercial fortunes of a single company as much as to any protocol.
BNB is closer to an equity-like exposure to an exchange than to a neutral protocol asset.
The burn gives it clearer supply mechanics than most peers.
Regulatory outcomes for the exchange are the dominant variable, not chain technology.
BNB Smart Chain is EVM-compatible and uses a proof of staked authority model with a limited validator set, which keeps fees low and blocks fast at the cost of a smaller, more permissioned validator group than a fully open network. Because it is EVM-compatible, Ethereum contracts and tooling port across with little friction, which is a large part of why its ecosystem grew so quickly.

BNB has clearer value capture than most exchange tokens, through a recurring burn that permanently removes supply, plus gas demand from chain activity and fee-discount demand from traders. The concentration risk is the mirror image of that clarity: a large part of the demand depends on one exchange remaining dominant and legally able to operate in its major markets.
BNB launched with a fixed supply that is reduced over time by a recurring burn mechanism, with a stated long-term target of removing a large share of the original supply. Unlike inflationary staking tokens, the supply trend is downward, which is one of the more concrete tokenomic features among large-cap assets.
Single-company dependency: much of BNB's utility disappears without the exchange.
Regulatory exposure: Binance has faced major enforcement actions and settlements across jurisdictions.
Validator concentration under proof of staked authority limits censorship resistance.
Cross-chain bridge history includes a large exploit, a reminder of infrastructure risk.
Ecosystem quality is uneven, with a high proportion of short-lived speculative projects.
