NEAR's consistent focus has been usability: human-readable account names instead of hex addresses, and applications that can cover gas costs so a new user is not blocked by needing tokens first. Its more recent work on chain abstraction extends the same idea across networks, letting an account act on several chains without the user managing each one. Whether that solves adoption or merely relocates the complexity is still an open question.
Usability is a real and underrated bottleneck; NEAR attacks it directly.

NEAR splits its state across shards so that capacity grows by adding shards rather than by demanding more from each validator. Accounts are named rather than raw keys, and support access keys with limited permissions, which is what lets an application pay a user's gas or authorise narrow actions without handing over full account control.

NEAR pays transaction fees and is staked to validators. A share of fees is burned, and contracts holding state must lock NEAR as storage staking, similar to Solana's rent. The tension worth noticing is that the abstraction features which make NEAR pleasant to use also hide the token from end users, so growth in users does not translate as directly into token demand as it would on a chain where everyone must hold gas.
