Shiba Inu launched as an Ethereum ERC-20 meme token and then attempted something most meme assets do not: building actual infrastructure around the brand, including a decentralized exchange and Shibarium, its own layer-2 network. Whether that infrastructure attracts durable usage, rather than only serving the token narrative, is the central question for the project.

SHIB launched in 2020 as an ERC-20 by the pseudonymous Ryoshi with one quadrillion units, half of which was sent unsolicited to Ethereum's creator — who burned roughly ninety percent of the gift and donated the rest, an accident of history that gave the token its scarcity narrative. The project has since built outward: ShibaSwap for trading, and Shibarium, an optimistic-rollup layer-2 where the ecosystem's activity settles with BONE as gas, with fee mechanics routed partly toward SHIB burns.

Ecosystem participation across its DEX and related products
SHIB itself is the brand asset; utility lives mostly in the ecosystem around it — BONE carries Shibarium's gas demand, and the burn mechanism is the one structural link turning L2 usage into supply reduction. The honest frame: demand remains overwhelmingly liquidity- and narrative-driven, and the ecosystem build-out has to earn the valuation the meme already priced.
No emission and no cap beyond the fixed enormous base: scarcity comes only from burns, which are voluntary and partly engineered via Shibarium fees. The unit price is tiny by construction, which shapes retail psychology more than economics — market cap, not the number of zeros, is the measure that matters.
Governance is a mix: a Doggy DAO governs parts of ShibaSwap, while ecosystem direction sits with the development team and community voting off-chain. The base token itself has no on-chain governance and cannot be changed by holders — burns, listings, and ecosystem funding are voluntary acts, not protocol rules.
Extremely large token supply concentrates attention on burn narratives
Ecosystem usage has to justify a valuation built on brand
Highly correlated with meme-sector sentiment
No. Half the supply was sent to him unsolicited at launch, and he chose to burn about ninety percent of it and donate the remainder to charity rather than sell. The event removed the largest potential overhang and created the credibility narrative — but it was luck, not design, which is worth remembering when evaluating marketing that implies otherwise.
Shibarium gives the ecosystem real transaction demand, with BONE as its gas asset and a portion of fee activity routed to SHIB burns — so L2 usage can reduce supply, the one structural mechanism connecting ecosystem adoption to the token beyond sentiment.
