Polygon began as a sidechain offering cheap transactions for Ethereum users and has since expanded into a family of scaling technologies including zk infrastructure, a chain development kit and an aggregation layer. In 2024 its native asset migrated from MATIC to POL, which is designed so a single stake can help secure many Polygon chains rather than just one.

Polygon PoS is a proof of stake chain that runs in parallel to Ethereum and periodically commits checkpoints to it. That gives users very low fees, but it is important to be precise: a sidechain with checkpointing does not inherit Ethereum's security the way a rollup does, because Ethereum does not validate its execution. The newer zk-based components in the Polygon stack aim to close exactly this gap.

POL is the gas and staking asset of Polygon PoS, so activity there does create direct demand, unlike governance-only L2 tokens. The wider ambition is that POL secures many chains in the ecosystem at once, letting one staked position earn from several networks. Whether that materialises depends on how many chains actually adopt the shared staking model rather than running independently.
The MATIC to POL migration was a one-to-one conversion rather than a new distribution. POL includes a modest ongoing emission intended to fund validator rewards and ecosystem development, which means holders face gradual dilution unless usage grows to offset it.
Polygon PoS does not inherit Ethereum security the way a rollup does, despite common marketing shorthand.
