Hyperliquid runs a perpetuals exchange where the entire order book lives on its own proof-of-stake L1, closing the gap between CEX trading feel and on-chain settlement. Fees fund HYPE buybacks through its Assistance Fund, which makes the token's case unusually direct for a DeFi platform: usage produces revenue, revenue retires supply. The trade-offs are operational: a small validator set and a founder-controlled core give it centralization risk most older protocols distributed earlier.

Every order, cancel, and fill is processed by the Hyperliquid L1, a BFT proof-of-stake chain whose validators run an in-memory order book, so matching happens on-chain with CEX-like latency. Perpetual contracts settle against oracle prices from the network's own oracle committee, and liquidations run through protocol logic rather than external keepers. HyperEVM extends the same L1 with an EVM environment that shares liquidity and state with the exchange.

HYPE has one of the clearest value-capture loops in DeFi: trading fees accumulate in the Assistance Fund, which uses them to buy HYPE on the open market, so exchange volume translates into structural demand for the token. Staking secures the L1 and earns a share of fees. The loop is real, and it is also concentrated: the exchange is the app, the L1, and the treasury in one stack.
HYPE launched with a large airdrop to users and no VC allocation, a distribution that made it one of the most community-weighted large launches. Total supply is fixed at 1 billion with defined unlocks for core contributors, and the Assistance Fund's buybacks permanently remove bought tokens from circulation.
There is no token-holder governance yet. Protocol direction sits with the founding team, with validators operating the chain but not setting its parameters. The team has framed progressive decentralization as a goal; the current state is closer to a founder-led company with an unusually transparent revenue link.

Trading fees flow into the Assistance Fund, which buys HYPE on the open market. Buybacks are not a promise of price support: they are a recurring structural buyer whose size moves with exchange revenue. When volume falls, that demand falls with it, which is the cyclical part of the loop.

Settlement and matching run on-chain through its BFT L1, which is more decentralized than an exchange database, but the validator set is small and the core software is controlled by the founding team. It is best described as an on-chain exchange with centralized operations, not a fully decentralized protocol.
