Smart contracts cannot see anything outside their own chain, which is a problem when a lending protocol needs to know the price of ETH. Chainlink solves this with networks of independent node operators that report data on-chain, where a contract aggregates their answers into a single trusted value. Because so much DeFi collateral is liquidated against Chainlink price feeds, the network functions as shared infrastructure whose failure would propagate across many protocols at once.

Cross-chain messaging is a separate and much more contested market than price feeds.
Each data feed is maintained by multiple independent oracle operators rather than a single reporter. Operators submit values during aggregation rounds, and an on-chain contract validates and aggregates their submissions into the feed's current answer, requiring a minimum number of responses before it updates. Updates fire on two triggers: a deviation threshold, when the real-world value moves beyond a set percentage, and a heartbeat, when a maximum time has passed without an update. The design means no single operator can move a feed on their own.

This is where LINK deserves scrutiny rather than assumption. Node operators are paid for publishing data, and LINK is the payment and staking asset of the network, so operator rewards and staking do create demand. But a great deal of Chainlink usage historically has been sponsored or subsidised rather than paid per-call by each consuming protocol, which means feed adoption and LINK revenue have not moved in lockstep. Anyone valuing LINK should look at how much is actually paid for oracle services, not at how many protocols display a Chainlink logo.
Chainlink has no token-holder governance vote over the protocol. Direction is set by Chainlink Labs and the node operator community, and new capabilities ship as new contracts and services that users opt into rather than as governed upgrades to a single system. Holders of LINK should not expect voting rights comparable to a DAO token.
Systemic dependency: a corrupted or stale feed can trigger wrongful liquidations across many protocols simultaneously.
Value accrual is indirect: heavy usage of Chainlink data does not automatically translate into LINK revenue.
Operator set concentration: feed integrity depends on the independence of a limited number of node operators.
Competition in cross-chain messaging is intense and not settled in Chainlink's favour.
Because every node running the chain must reach the same result when re-executing a transaction. If a contract called an external API, different nodes would get different answers at different moments and consensus would break. Data has to be put on-chain by someone first, which is precisely the job an oracle network does.
Protocols consuming it act on the wrong number, which in lending markets can mean liquidating positions that were actually healthy or failing to liquidate ones that were not. This is why aggregation across independent operators and minimum-response thresholds exist. It is also why oracle risk is regularly cited as one of the largest systemic risks in DeFi rather than a minor technical detail.
