The National Bank of Ethiopia's February 2026 notice says Birr-paired P2P arrangements on trading platforms, exchanges, or similar services are not permitted unless expressly authorised by the NBE, and that any Birr-denominated P2P crypto trading or exchange is prohibited. It says the NBE is working toward a comprehensive framework; a draft national payments strategy contemplates studying virtual assets and, if appropriate, creating a framework and pilots. These sources do not prove that every crypto asset or service is prohibited or permitted, or authorise a specific platform. Confirm the current scope directly before acting.

SEC rules cover virtual-asset service providers, exchanges, custodians, and offering platforms. The SEC directory includes registered operators and incubation-program participants; verify current status and do not confuse programme participation with final registration. CBN guidelines govern how banks and other institutions relate to VASPs, but do not permit banks to hold, trade, or transact in virtual currencies on their own account.

Review date for each country guide
We show only regulatory and tax claims with local primary guidance and a current review. Adoption metrics require a national source for each figure.
Each visible claim links to its official country source. Adoption links are assigned to the exact metric, not the entire profile.
Each guide shows its next review date. Always confirm your residence, activity, and transaction with the authority or a local professional before filing.

We do not infer rankings. A value appears only when the exact figure has a linked official national source.
